Effects of equatorially-confined shear flow on MRG and Rossby waves

Linear modal stability analysis of a mean zonal shear flow is carried out in the framework rotating shallow water equations (RSWE), both under $\beta$-plane approximation and full spherical coordinate system. Two base flows -- equatorial easterly (EE) westerly (EW) with Gaussian profiles highly confined to small latitudes are analyzed. At low Froude number, mixed Rossby-gravity (MRG) Rossby waves found be particularly affected by shear, prominent changes at higher wavenumbers. These become practically non-dispersive large wavenumbers EE. The perturbations more equatorially EE than EW degree confinement being pronounced system compared high phase speeds significantly larger for all families waves. Under approximation, exponentially unstable modes can excited, having negative (positive) speed (EW). Strikingly, this always neutrally stable This speaks importance studying whole even shear.
